Neurodiversity describes the differences between how people think, process information, behave and communicate. Everyone is unique, but most people are neurotypical - their brains process information and experience the world in a relatively similar way. there are many different profiles associated with neurodivergence, but some commonly known presentations are ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia. And once you start looking, you will see that neurodiverse people are everywhere!
‘Twice Exceptional’ is sometimes called ‘Dual or Multiple Exceptionalities’ (DME). It refers to people who have a high, or exceptional ability in one or more areas, but also has some specific Neurodivergent traits. It’s way more common that most people realise. Children who are Twice Exceptional might have, for example, high cognitive abilities but deficits in their ‘toolbox’ like Dyslexia. Or they may be highly able in verbal reasoning but struggle with attention deficits. So, it’s an asymmetric profile that can lead to a tough fit for school but makes for very creative, interesting people!
If your child is showing behaviours that are harmful to themselves or others you need to seek medical advice immediately. Phone your GP and explain that your child is experiencing a mental health crisis and that you need immediate support. GPs usually take these enquiries seriously and will refer you to CAMHs (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services). You can also refer your child to CAMHs yourself, as a parent. If your child is endangering life (theirs or someone else’s) , call 999 immediately.
